Le collectif acid jazz Brooklyn Funk Essentials est créé en 1993 par le producteur Arthur Baker et le bassiste Lati Kronlund. L'année suivante, le groupe écume les clubs de New York aux Etats-Unis avec les chanteuses Joi Cardwell, Sha-key et Papa Dee, les poètes Everton Sylvester et David Allen, le DJ Jazzy Nice, le clavier Yuka Honda et le batteur Yancy Drew. La formation compte également une section d'instruments à vent. Il signe en 1994 son premier album Cool and steady and easy [UB7785] avec le hit underground The creator has a master plan. Joi Cardwell quitte le groupe pour tenter une carrière solo. Elle est remplacée par Stephanie McKay. Brooklyn Funk Essentials revient ensuite avec In the buzz bag [UB7784] en 1998 et Make 'em like it [UB7788] en l'an 2000.[mcm.net]
