1973-1975 est une période prolifique pour James Brown, il publie 5 albums sur ce laps de temps et aligne 3 Top1 consécutifs dans les charts R&B ("The Payback", "My Thang" et "Papa don't take no mess"). Cette période constitue les derniers moments de la "grande époque" du chanteur qui voit l'année 1975 marquée par le départ de certains de ses musiciens notoires dont Jabo Stark parti en Avril pour rejoindre BB king, Fred Wesley en Juillet et Maceo Parker en Septembre. Le funk par ailleurs se diluant à partir du milieu des années 70 dans le disco.
