John Martyn, est l'un des artistes anglais parmi les plus novateurs de son époque. Auteur-compositeur-interprète britannique de folk rock, en quarante ans de carrière, il a publié vingt albums studio, en travaillant avec des artistes tels qu'Eric Clapton, David Gilmour ou encore Phil Collins. Voici pour la première fois l'intégralité de ses enregistrements sortis sur Island Records entre 1967 et 1987. Le coffret The Island Years est présenté en format 30 cm. Il contient 12 albums studio clés de John Martyn, enrichis de versions alternatives et de mix totalement inédits. Il comporte également les démos réalisées pour l'album The Apprentice et pour la toute première fois 2 concerts solo acoustiques enregistrés, l'un en mai 1972 à Richmond, l'autre en août 1977 à Sydney. Parmi les autres enregistrements live de ce coffret, se trouve bien évidemment l'incontournable Live at Leeds de 1975. Autres temps forts de ce coffret : 1 DVD de prestations télévisées rares et un book contenant un texte de présentation écrit par John Hillarby et de nombreuses photos rares et inédites.
