"This set of "new sounds from black Peru" is the work of two very different musicians: Peruvian composer and percussionist Rodolfo Muñoz and Christoph H Müller, the Swiss electronica exponent best known for his work in reworking tango with the bestselling Gotan Project. Their aim is to transform Afro-Peruvian styles, making use of rhythm instruments invented by African slaves after their drums were banned. So the percussion is provided by the quijada, made from the lower jaw of a donkey, along with the cajita, originally fashioned from a church moneybox, and the cajon box drum, all played mainly by Muñoz. Müller boosts the rhythm section further with his programming, and they are joined by Peruvian singers and musicians playing anything from acoustic guitar to violin, cello and trombone. The songs, most of which are written by Muñoz and Müller, include cool, drifting ballads such as Que Lindo Suena, which features impressive vocals from Victoria Villalobos; the delicate, acoustic Mimi's Waltz; brass-backed percussive dance tracks; and a dash of Peruvian hip-hop. Like the Gotan Project, this could appeal to an unexpectedly wide audience." (Robin Denselow, www.theguardian.co.uk)
