"Maurice Jarre's great soundtrack for this legendary film by Luchino Visconti -- music as driving and dramatic as the story itself! There's a bit less sentimentality here than some of Jarre's other work of the 60s -- and a bit less of an epic sensibility too -- as many of the tunes have a stark, personal feel -- very up-close, even when the orchestrations are somewhat large, and focused on some key themes that spin out with simple, almost stepping sorts of rhythms.
