Buveur et blasphémateur, cela ne l'empêcha pas d'écrire une musique d'Eglise absolument sublime. L'anthem, dans son catalogue, se décline sous divers genres : full anthem et verse anthem. Sa polyphonie dense fait merveille dans Hosanna to the Son of David à laquelle il confère une ampleur rarement atteinte dans le genre. Ses verse anthems lui permettent de varier l'effectif vocal passant du solo au choeur avec toutes les gradations possibles. Quelques pièces pour consort de violes viennent se glisser entre les oeuvres vocales de ce disque à l'interprétation fort honorable. AG
