Le luthiste américain Lee Santana renoue avec la tradition de l'interprète-compositeur propre aux 17ème et 18ème siècles. Dans la première moitié du présent enregistrement, l'interprète nous livre quelques grandes oeuvres de John Dowland jouées au luth ou au cistre. Sa lecture simple et directe est très rafraichissante aux oreilles sans pour autant exclure virtuosité et expressivité. Dans la section suivante, Santana fait sortir de l'ombre des pièces visiblement inspirées par celles de Dowland comme Fortune ou Can she excuse my wrong. Parmi celles-ci, deux variations du célèbre Lachrymae écrites par des compositeurs allemands contemporain de l'Orpheus britannicus. Pour finir, le compositeur met en perspective deux de ses oeuvres avec celles du modèle. Et cela ne manque pas d'intérêt, ni de charme. AG
