Cette production de Didon et Enée voit le jour pour commémorer le 350ème anniversaire de la naissance de Purcell. La distribution fait la part belle aux meilleurs chanteurs anglais (et canadien pour Gerald Finley).
La mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly initie le projet et ajoute plusieurs fragments de musique (provenant de Bonduca et de Didon, reine de Carthage). L'ensemble instrumental est plus réduit qu'à l'origine et comporte onze cordes, trois théorbes, une guitare et un clavecin. Autre particularité de cet enregistrement: deux directeurs musicaux soutiennent le projet, l'un d'eux tient la partie du continuo.
Saluons la prestation de Sarah Connolly dans le rôle de Didon (particulièrement dans l'air final). Ce personnage devenu obsessionnel pour la chanteuse me permet d'insister sur une carrière marquée par des réalisations "upper class". Pour ne citer que le Giulio Cesare de Glyndebourne....MDW
