A la fin du XV° siècle, les luthistes italiens substituèrent les doigts de la main droite au plectre et firent du luth un instrument polyphonique. Grâce à cette nouvelle pratique, les chansons polyphoniques existantes purent être interprétées par un chanteur seul: le "Lute Song" était né. C'est en Angleterre qu'il connaîtra son apogée. L'instrument joué par Alfonso Marin dans cet enregistrement est une copie d'un luth à 7 choeurs de 1582.
