SERGE CHALOFF (1923-1957) a été un des premiers saxophoniste baryton de l'ère bebop (années 50). Ses improvisations dynamiques, la virtuosité et la précision de son placement rythmique ont contribué à mettre en avant (soliste) le saxophone baryton, pas encore très habitué à ce rôle dans la sphère jazz. Un ajustement au langage du bebop dans l'élaboration d'une modernité sonore tributaire de Lester Young. La carrière de Serge Chaloff sera tragiquement écourtée et l'histoire retiendra davantage un autre saxophoniste baryton : Gerry Mulligan. Ce coffret anthologique de 4CD constitue donc une bonne (re)découverte de ce musicien un peu oublié. (BB/LF)
